The annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is always a grand affair and it attracts millions of people around the world. This lavish event is accompanied by a live performance of famous musicians and ends with the long-awaited presentation of the new Fantasy Bra- an incredibly expensive bra encrusted with gemstones. The preparations for this luxurious show last at least one year and invitations to attend the show are sent to celebrities and other carefully selected individuals. The filming takes place a few days before the television premiere. Up until the year 2013, all Victoria’s Secret shows took place in the USA and once in Cannes, France. Within the past years, the locations of the show have significantly expanded to parts of Europe and Asia. However, we at Bright Side decided to go further and find out what this show is all about, what stays behind the curtains and what happens in the models’ dressing rooms.
Months of intensive physical training and dieting are in the past and now they have only a couple of days to finalize everything and do their best to look stunning on the runway.
On the appointed day, the show is filmed twice in order to get the best shots on camera.
Models fly to the destination on a pink colored plane — to match the color of the company. Sponsors, operators, journalists of global mass media, bloggers and other people participating in the show process go on the same plane to the same destination together with the models.
All models wear clothes that is created especially for the flight, since photo shoots for mass and social media begin as soon as the plane takes off.
On the plane, the members receive gift sets and pink blankets with Victoria’s Secret symbols.
Behind the curtains, models pose for photographers and take selfies in pink robes that have become an irreplaceable attribute of the backstage show. These robes can be purchased on the official site and to help you feel like an ’Angel’ before the show.
The total number of people working to organize the show is unknown. But it’s quite large, as the beauty team itself consists of approximately 100 people.
The number of cosmetic items used to prepare a model for the show is shocking — more than 40 bottles of hairspray and around 150 items of lipgloss.
The ideal skin tone matters and there is a specialist responsible for it. He starts working with some models 1-2 days prior to the show, with others — 1 day prior to the show. His task is to find the ideal tone for each model. Moreover, he must do the contouring to accentuate certain body parts.
Before applying the makeup, makeup artists provide acupressure, a special type of massage, to get the facial muscles toned. It works just as well as professional cosmetics do.
To ’activate’ the skin instantly and remove swelling, makeup artists use ice cubes wrapped in thin cloth to wipe the models’ faces and pay special attention to the delicate eye area.
On the day of the show, the makeup and hairstyling process take about 5 hours.
Makeup artists create natural images enhancing eyes. To do this, they curl eyelashes using an eyelash curler, apply several layers of mascara, and use a gray-brown liner.
An entire team of professionals work hard on the models’ hairstyles. They use a special style called “beach waves” — tousled hair that looks like the wind created natural waves. To look even more natural, hair tongs are used to curl the locks no more than a couple of seconds and each in different directions.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show can be quite rough on all of its participants. Some ’angel’ wings can weigh up to 44 lbs on account of the encrusted gemstones. When taking this heavy ’accessory’ into account, it is necessary to have enough energy in order to get through the back-to-back photoshoots and filming. This is why models prefer to eat something nutritious, like an energy bar or a sandwich on whole grain bread before the runway show starts. However, journalists say that there is a big choice of food that isn’t alwasy healthy and sometimes there is even alcohol behind the curtains.
Each year, a new model is chosen to wear the luxurious gemstone bra. This year, Brazilian model Lais Riberiro presented the Fantasy Bra, estimated to cost around $2 million.
It took 350 hours of hard work to create this masterpiece.
