We rarely think about how interesting and unique our bodies are. Did you know, for example, that taste can be felt through the feet? Or that men and women lose the same amount of hair daily?

The amount of saliva that our bodies produce is surprising — it equals to about 0.5 liters or even more within a day. All because its amount depends on the food that we eat during the day. A person has about 160 billion blood vessels. If you were to look at it as one line, it would stretch to over 100,000 miles and would be enough to wrap around Earth’s equator 4 times. Our digestive tract is very long. The length of the large and small intestines along with the stomach is about 30 feet (that’s the height of a 3-story building). Apparently, the longest part belongs to the intestines — the length of the large intestine is 6 feet and the length of the small intestine is 20 feet.
The construction of the body of adults and children is very different. The main difference is in the number of bones — on average, a child has 90-95 bones more than an adult. It is connected with the fact that bones merge while the kid grows. Our bodies can feel taste not only with the help of the mouth. If you apply garlic or onion to your feet, 1 hour later you will taste it in your mouth. A person blinks approximately every 4 seconds, which is 15 times per minute. By simple calculations, it was revealed that we blink about 20,000 times per day. This means that we stay with our eyes closed for approximately 1.5 hours during the day. Apart from saliva, we have many kinds of bacteria in the mouth. Their number is more than the number of people on the planet, 7.6 billion!
If we could make a camera out of our eyes, its resolution would be 576 megapixels. But our brain wouldn’t be able to store as many photos — its resources are enough to hold 2.5 million gigabytes. If you aren’t sure what size your feet are, your arm can help. The length of your arm from wrist to elbow matches the length of your foot almost perfectly. Human nails actually grow quite fast. The speed of their growth is about 3.47 mm per month and the fastest nail to grow is on the middle finger. Toenails grow 2 times slower.
We lose a huge amount of our skin particles daily. Their number can reach up to 1 million because every hour we lose somewhere from 30 to 40 thousand skin cells. That’s why the biggest part of dust in our homes consists of skin from our bodies. It’s a well-known fact that we should sustain the necessary amount of all microelements in our bodies. Interestingly, the usual amount of iron in our bodies would be enough to produce a little nail weighing 4 g. Many believe that women shed more hair than men but that is not true. Women lose anywhere from 50 to 100 hairs daily, while men lose 25 to 100 hairs.
Newborn babies’ eyes have either grey or blue color in them. Our bodies have special cells called melanocytes — they are responsible for the secretion of melanin protein in the necessary places, including the iris of the eyes. And since it’s always dark in the womb, newborn babies’ eyes have either grey or blue color since melanocytes start being produced only when some light is present. It explains why kids’ eyes color often changes as they grow up. Our fingers are very sensitive and they can feel even the tiniest things. Let’s take our earth as an example: if it were the size of a finger, then you would feel and be able to identify houses, trees, and cars just by touching it. Our bodies produce a lot of heat. Within 1 hour, we produce as much energy as a light bulb with the power of 100 watts can.
Bonus: What losing weight might look like
Not only is losing weight about dieting and partaking in physical activity, but it’s also about getting some unexpected consequences. While gaining weight, our skin stretches to provide enough space for storing new fat. Therefore, as you lose weight, the skin’s surface stays the same because it’s not capable of shrinking that fast. All of this results in sagging and ’hanging’ skin as well as the appearance of stretch marks. Simone Anderson, an Instagram celebrity and the author of the book, Journey to Health: “How I Lost Half My Body Weight and Found a New Way of Life” is a good example of such a consequence.
