The survey shows that only 30% of us sleep naked and the rest prefer to stay in their underwear or buy comfortable pajamas. But what is better for our health is up for debate. Some state that sleeping in the buff has more health benefits than we could suspect. And others note that it is not for everyone.
A lot of people choose to get rid of their sleepwear simply because they find it more comfortable. But sleeping naked has science-based pros and cons you probably don’t know about. At Bright Side, we gathered some important facts about sleeping au naturel.
1. It helps you get deeper sleep.
Scientists from the University of Amsterdam found that lowering your skin temperature increases the shut-eye quality and reduces the number of times you wake up during the night. Sleeping naked is a good way to lower your skin temperature without changing the temperature of your bedroom. Moreover, pajamas limit your freedom of movement. Sleeping naked means you don’t have to worry about your nightie getting twisted and this helps you get better and deeper sleep.
2. It can help you lose weight.
Unfortunately, we can’t get skinnier just by sleeping, but in combination with a diet and regular exercise, proper sleep can help lose a little weight. According to the researchers affiliated with the National Institutes of Health, sleeping in lower temperatures boosts the metabolism and prevents diabetes progression. In addition, the level of cortisol, the stress hormone, also plays a role here. While we sleep overheated, our cortisol levels stay high. This, in turn, can lead to weight gain, increased anxiety, and even a desire for junk food.
3. It helps your skin.
All day long, our feet and private parts are covered by multiple layers of clothes. By skipping the sleepwear, we give our body and especially the parts that tend to sweat more than others, a chance to breathe. This can actually decrease the risk of such skin diseases as athlete’s foot which is caused by wet, restricted skin. Moreover, sleeping in lower temperatures protects our cells and has an anti-aging effect. This occurs thanks to melatonin, also called the “sleep hormone,” which is responsible for preventing the degeneration of cells.
Sweat can seriously damage your hair. Dry sweat leaves a lot of salt that can irritate your scalp and make hair more vulnerable to breakage. Sleeping in cooler temperatures will allow you to sweat less and to have beautiful and stronger hair.

Female reproductive organs can be a good environment for funguses and bacterium to develop. Sleeping in the nude helps keep this area cool, dry, and “aired”, and this reduces the risk of overheating. For men, tight-fitting underwear can affect semen quality and reproductive health. To decrease these risks, it is recommended to take off boxers before bed and keep the testes at a cooler temperature.

Confidence is key for a successful career and a fulfilling social life. Sleeping naked helps you become more confident in your own skin. And when your comfortable with your body the way it is, you exude confidence in whatever clothing you wear during the day.

According to the survey of over 1000 people, those sleeping in the nude have happier marriages and relationships. 57% of them reported having a more fulfilling romantic relationship with their partner, compared to just 48% of those who sleep in pajamas. It can be explained by skin-to-skin contact that releases a great amount of oxytocin, also called the “feel good hormone.” Oxytocin, in turn, makes you feel more relaxed and floods you with affection for your beloved one.

If you are among 3% of sleepwalking people, don’t rush to throw away your sleepwear. There are many cases when naked sleepwalkers had neighbor-related problems and some were even arrested! Those who suffer from sleepwalking should think twice before sleeping in the buff as it can harm their reputation and can even be dangerous.
9. You have a delicate skin.
If you have allergies or sensitive skin, sleeping naked is not for you. In this case, pajamas provide you necessary protection from various irritants. Exposed skin can cause such problems as allergies, skin irritation, and asthma due to dust and bugs.
10. You are prone to catching colds.
Sleeping naked can be an issue for those who live in cooler climates and don’t have proper heating. The temperature drops at night, so it’s important not to be exposed to excessive cold to decrease the chances of falling ill the next morning.
11. You feel anxiety.
If you feel uncomfortable sleeping in the nude or if you’re always afraid that your children or roommates will enter the bedroom, you won’t sleep soundly. At that rate, don’t worry and enjoy your comfiest pajamas! Remember that a good night’s sleep is essential for your health and well-being!
